This trail begins at Parque Florestal das Queimadas and runs along the Levada do Caldeirão Verde walkway in the municipality of Santana. The Levada do Caldeirão Verde, an impressive work of art built in the 18th century, starts at the main bed of Ribeira do Caldeirão Verde and carries water through the extraordinary Laurissilva Forest, classified as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since December 1999, to the agricultural lands of Faial parish.
After passing through the 4 tunnels along the route, Caldeirão Verde appears to the left of the levada. To reach it, simply climb a few meters up the bed of Ribeira do Caldeirão Verde.
Caldeirão Verde is formed by a lagoon that collects water projected from the mountains by a monumental 110m waterfall, surrounded by abundant vegetation that gives it its green color. Of particular note is the cluster of elderberry trees (Sambucus lanceolata), a true paradise for some birds that inhabit this area, such as the Madeira laurel pigeon (Columba trocaz trocaz), an endemic species exclusive to Madeira island. Take advantage of this magical and inspiring place to recharge your energy for the return journey.
If you choose to continue to Caldeirão do Inferno, you'll face a more physically demanding section ahead. It's approximately 2,200 meters with steep climbs and tunnels. Caldeirão do Inferno is the best example of a very narrow and deep river gorge, resulting from the strong erosive action of water.
On your return to Parque Florestal das Queimadas, don't miss visiting the "Casa das Tradições Madeirenses", a house that maintains the original characteristics of typical Santana houses, featuring a spectacular thatched roof and a collection relating to the daily life and customs of our ancestors.
