PR 10 - Levada do Furado

This trail, beginning at Ribeiro Frio in the municipality of Santana, follows the walkway of the Levada da Serra do Faial or Levada do Furado, to the water division house, then descends to the Lamaceiros area and ends at Portela, in the municipality of Machico.
The route of the Levada do Furado bears witness to the arduous work involved in opening channels for water transport, from their sources on the northern slope to the agricultural fields on the southern coast.
Along this levada it is possible to contemplate imposing rock formations, as well as varied shades of green provided by the island's natural forest – the Laurissilva Forest, composed predominantly of Laurel (Laurus novocanariensis), Lily-of-the-valley Tree (Clethra arborea), Til (Ocotea foetens), Vinhatico (Persea indica), and notably the Pride of Madeira (Isoplexis sceptrum), Viper's Bugloss (Echium candicans) and the Serra Orchid (Dactylorhiza foliosa).
It is possible to spot the Madeira Firecrest (Regulus ignicapillus madeirensis), the smallest bird that inhabits Madeira, and the fearless Chaffinch (Fringila coelebs). With luck, you may encounter the Trocaz Pigeon (Columba trocaz trocaz), an endemic species of Madeira.
It is at the Lamaceiros site where the waters separate, and it is here that the Levada da Serra do Faial ends and where the descent to Portela begins.
Crossing the forest area of Lamaceiros, passing the Forest Post, the route continues along the dirt road until it meets the Levada da Portela, which skirts the left side of Lombo das Faias, ending when it meets the regional road ER 102.
