Levada Nova do Arco da Calheta

The Levada Nova do Arco da Calheta corresponds to a channel that, in addition to providing hydro-agricultural supply along its approximately 16 km extension, serves as an important channel for electricity production. Its route continues the hydrographic project of the Levada Nova da Calheta, which did not previously serve the parish of Arco da Calheta, extending the levada to the neighboring municipality of Ponta do Sol.

This recent channel, like most of the channels existing on the island of Madeira, beyond its water and energy impacts, is responsible for making the locality more attractive as the peaceful walk that can be taken is worthy of being traveled.

Along this route, it is possible to come into direct contact with the agricultural universe of the municipality, as many cultivation areas have been recovered, making the landscape harmoniously integrated.

On this levada, it is possible to spot endemic forest and "introduced" forest, with the green scenery sometimes alternating with wide panoramic views where you can see the residential areas of the parishes of Calheta and Arco da Calheta, having the Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop for much of the route.

When walking either this levada or its counterpart Levada Nova da Calheta, you will not remain indifferent to a phenomenon that has been occurring with greater frequency year after year, as many are the recovery projects of both traditional agricultural shelters and isolated properties once inhabited. Second home construction or the creation of tourism projects are the most frequent, highlighting initiatives from many of the tourists who visit the island of Madeira and become involved in these circumstances.
