Strolling in the capital of the Madeira archipelago means enjoying both the best of nature and a typically European cosmopolitan atmosphere. The Funchal Promenade (Passeio Marítimo do Funchal) is precisely one of the places where this becomes most evident.
The Passeio Público Marítimo, located in the western part of the city, runs the entire length from Rua do Gorgulho to Ponta da Cruz, passing Praça da Região Autónoma da Madeira, Clube Naval do Funchal, Estação de Biologia Marítima and the Complexo Balnear da Ponta Gorda.
The first section of this promenade was inaugurated in August 1993. At the time it became known as the 'Jardins do Lido'. This extensive pedestrian axis passes by the Estação de Biologia Marinha and the Complexo Balnear da Ponta Gorda, until it reaches Ponta da Cruz, where the Doca do Cavacas tunnel begins — starting another route that links this Passeio Marítimo to the Baía de Câmara de Lobos — the Promenade de Câmara de Lobos.
Hand in hand with this seafront promenade, several exotic species of Madeiran flora appear harmoniously, set against lawns and park benches which form a kind of viewing area from which you can admire the wonderful gardens that extend to the cliff edge. Those who enjoy the Passeio Marítimo do Funchal therefore have the opportunity to take in an unrivalled view of the coastline carved by the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, the entire route features diverse plant life, harmoniously integrating Madeiran endemic species and various exotic plants.
Along the Passeio Marítimo do Funchal there are planted date palms (Phoenix dactylifera). On the escarpment are herbaceous plants and climbers that add even more colour to this area.
