Starting at Achada do Teixeira, this route leads up to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak on the Island of Madeira, at 1862 metres above sea level.
Along the ascent you will find several shelters where you can rest and take cover: at this altitude weather changes can be sudden and dramatic, and it is common for the area to be engulfed in a sea of clouds.
This area is part of the European Network of Sites of Community Importance – Rede Natura 2000.
Beside the shelter at Pico Ruivo you have access to three other walking routes that take you to different points of the island: PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro (6.1 km/7 km), which leads to the island's 3rd highest peak, Pico do Areeiro; PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada (11.2 km), which heads west across the island to Encumeada; and PR 1.1 Vereda da Ilha (8.2 km), which descends to the parish of Ilha.
On arrival at Pico Ruivo, take time to rest and enjoy being at the top of the island. On clear days you can enjoy a 360º view of the island, spotting Curral das Freiras, Ponta de São Lourenço, the Desertas islands and Porto Santo island.
At Achada do Teixeira you can also visit the “Homem em Pé”, an intriguing basalt rock formation located on the slope after passing the Achada do Teixeira shelter.
