PR 15 - Vereda da Ribeira da Janela

This trail connects the settlement of Ribeira da Janela with the forested area above it, between 820 and 400 metres in elevation. It starts beside the regional road ER209 in the Curral Falso area and ends on the same road, already within the settlement of Ribeira da Janela.

The route follows the traces of an old path used by local people to harvest the forest's wood resources essential to their daily lives.

It was also the route used by residents to reach the towns to the south, especially Calheta and Ponta do Sol, where strong young men would climb the mountain slopes carrying barrels and/or borrachos of wine on their backs to sell and/or trade for other goods.

In Ribeira da Janela you can experience the traditional and distinctive agricultural landscape, with its characteristic terraced fields supported by painstakingly built stone walls, growing sweet potato, semilha (potato), beans, corn and the indispensable vineyards of Ribeira da Janela.
