This trail that runs alongside the Levada do Rei begins near the Water Treatment Plant (ETA) in Quebradas, São Jorge, and ends at the levada's source in the spectacular Ribeiro Bonito.
The first part of the route consists of a mix of endemic vegetation and other species introduced after the island's discovery.
In the second part of the route, the luxuriant vegetation and great variety of species you may encounter are excellent living examples of the island's natural potential, while the beautiful levada bears witness to the island's valuable cultural heritage.
At Ribeiro Bonito, we can say you will feel like you're in an authentic natural sanctuary. This is one of the most beautiful areas of the Laurisilva Forest on Madeira Island – classified as a Natural World Heritage site by UNESCO since December 1999 – whose location and isolation evoke a sense of returning to the time of the island's discovery.
On your return, don't miss visiting the São Jorge Water Mill, with about three centuries of history. This mill is a fine example of preservation, powered by waters from the Levada do Rei, which grinds wheat, corn, barley, and rye grown on São Jorge's agricultural terraces.
