PR 22 - Vereda do Chão dos Louros

This circular route has the distinctive feature of offering various combinations for its completion, as it can be started from several points along its path. This trail allows you to explore the surrounding area of the Chão dos Louros forest park – an integral part of the European Network of Sites of Community Importance – Natura 2000 Network, access Ribeira Grande through the existing connection to PR 21 Caminho do Norte, and enjoy magnificent views over the entire São Vicente valley from the natural viewpoint along the route.

The trail unfolds through the interior of the exuberant Laurisilva forest, designated as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since December 1999, where evergreen trees belonging to the Lauraceae family predominate, such as the Laurel (Laurus novocanariensis) often accompanied by Madre-de-louro (Laurobasidium laurii – resulting from fungal action), Til (Ocotea foetens) and Vinhático (Persea indica).

It is traditional for pilgrims returning from the Senhor Bom Jesus festival, held in the parish of Ponta Delgada on the first Sunday of September, to gather at Chão dos Louros to enjoy the various recreational and leisure activities provided by this excellent space.
