The trail begins on the regional road (ER 209), at Fanal, and follows the PR 13 Vereda do Fanal until you find, on the left, the branch that will lead you to the Levada da Rocha Vermelha.
During the route you will encounter a true steep stairway flanked by the levada where you can witness the spectacular force of the water caused by the significant elevation drop (called "rapids").
The Levada da Rocha Vermelha, also known as Água do Vimieiro, originates in Ribeira da Fajã dos Remos, and along its course it captures and channels the waters of Ribeira do Vimeiro, tributaries of Ribeira da Janela and Ribeira da Calheta, as well as tributaries of Ribeira do Seixal up to the small loading chamber of Rocha Vermelha, located on the slope of Ribeira da Calheta, in Lombo da Atouguia.
The waterfalls, existing tunnels and various natural viewpoints, where it is possible to contemplate the impressive views over the Rabaçal valley and Ribeira da Janela, dominated by the characteristic green of the Laurissilva Forest, classified as UNESCO World Natural Heritage and part of the European Network of Sites of Community Importance – Natura 2000 Network, guarantee a special enchantment to this walking trail.
Access to the Levada da Rocha Vermelha can also be made from the PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes, located at a higher elevation.
