The Levada do Barreiro, with a distance of 5.2 km, connects Poço da Neve to Casa do Barreiro, in the Funchal Ecological Park. On this quite diverse walking route, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy contact with nature, as well as some panoramic views over the city of Funchal.
The walk along Levada do Barreiro begins on Regional Road No. 202, which provides access to Pico do Areeiro. Initially, you'll find Poço da Neve, Funchal heritage dating from 1813. This igloo-shaped construction was used to store snow and hail that occasionally fell in the mountains, to supply ice to the city.
During the Levada do Barreiro itinerary, considered easy difficulty with an estimated duration of 2h10, you can appreciate a cluster of high-altitude vegetation typical of the island, where tree heathers and mountain bilberries stand out. Following parallel to the Levada do Barreiro, you'll then have access to a privileged view over the Ribeira de Santa Luzia valley and over Funchal.
During the route along Levada do Barreiro, don't miss contemplating the landscape from the Barreiro viewpoint. Upon arrival at Casa do Barreiro, you can choose to continue to the picturesque parish of Monte.
