PR 5 - Vereda das Funduras

The trail begins at the Portela viewpoint, where you can appreciate one of the island's most stunning landscapes: the view over the parishes of Porto da Cruz and Faial, dominated by the imposing rocky mass of Penha d'Águia.
The hike continues along the forest path of the Serra das Funduras until you find the trail on the right that will lead you through the interior of the Laurissilva Forest to the "Casa das Funduras".
It is in this mountain range that you'll find the best area of Laurissilva Forest on the southern slope of Madeira island, which is part of the European Network of Sites of Community Importance – Natura 2000 Network.
Upon reaching the "Casa das Funduras", a house belonging to the Regional Government that serves as support for forestry activities, you can choose to visit the Larano viewpoint, from which you'll have the possibility of contemplating the beautiful view over Machico city bay, or if you prefer to continue, you'll need to descend along the trail that will accompany you to the Maroços settlement.
Throughout this descent, don't miss appreciating the traditional terraced stone walls that so characterize the Madeiran agricultural landscape. At the Portela viewpoint you have access to PR 10 Levada do Furado.
