The trail starts at regional road ER 105 and descends to the Rabaçal shelter house. The route begins parallel to the Levada do Risco, later the trails separate following two parallel levadas located at different elevations.
If you descend on PR 6, you can visit the lagoon of 25 Fontes, formed by waters that flow down from Paul da Serra and mysteriously appear from behind the wall that forms it, where you can count more than 25 springs.
The Levada das 25 Fontes, also known as Levada Nova do Rabaçal, began construction in 1835, with the first waters flowing on September 26, 1855.
At this elevation, high-altitude heathland predominates, with a prevalence of tree heath (Erica arborea), Madeiran broom heath (Erica scoparia ssp maderensis) and Madeira bilberry (Vaccinium padifolium).
Along the route you can enjoy impressive views over the Ribeira da Janela valley, dominated by the characteristic green of the Laurissilva Forest, classified as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site since December 1999, and part of the European Network of Sites of Community Importance – Natura 2000 Network. Once you reach the Lagoon of 25 Fontes, take advantage of the magic of this place to restore your strength for the return journey.
