The Vereda da Boca do Risco – Larano is a spectacular trail that encompasses agricultural elements, the exotic scenery of the regional flora, and reveals the idyllic landscape of Madeira’s slopes.
The starting point of this walk is beside the so-called “casa dos levadeiros”, initially accompanied by the watercourse of the Levada dos Maroços, which leads to cultivated agricultural fields with fruits and vegetables typical of the area, intermingled with small exotic woodlands.
Up to the first stage of the route (Levada dos Maroços), the setting is peaceful and dominated by traditional agricultural plots. Following the well-marked trail, you quickly reach Boca do Risco, and from here it’s easy to understand why it is considered one of the most beautiful natural viewpoints on the eastern side of the island.
The Vereda da Boca do Risco takes you down to the Ribeira Seca valley; you should follow to the right and leave the Levada do Caniçal behind. The transition of the route is properly signposted.
The Vereda da Boca do Risco is itself a very interesting and engaging route, which ends iconically at the natural viewpoint of Boca do Risco, the highlight of the whole walk. From here the trail can go in two directions: toward the parish of Caniçal or the opposite way, toward the parish of Porto da Cruz.
Some visitors finish the trail at Boca do Risco and return along the same path to the starting point.
Heading to Larano, you need to descend a little and then turn left. The section from Boca do Risco to Larano is a stunning route in terms of scenery. Upon arriving at Larano, the endemic vegetation gives way to exotic species, while retaining a lush green appearance. The trail effectively ends at Caminho do Cabo do Larano, where there is a small cable car.
From here you can choose to descend to the village of Porto da Cruz or hire specialized services. For this route, we suggest hiring a tourist activity company with a guide, or if you prefer to hike independently, arranging transport to return to your accommodation or to the starting point where you parked your vehicle.
