Vereda Boca do Risco - Caniçal

The Vereda da Boca do Risco – Caniçal is a spectacular trail that encompasses the agricultural component, exotic scenery of regional botany, and reveals the idyllic coastal landscape of Madeira.
The starting point of this hike is near the so-called "levada keepers' house", where you'll be accompanied by the waterway of Levada dos Maroços, which leads you through agricultural fields cultivated with fruits and vegetables typical of that area, amid interaction with small exotic groves.
The Vereda da Boca do Risco takes you to the Ribeira Seca valley, where you should follow to the right and leave Levada do Caniçal behind. The route transition is properly signposted.
Up to the first stage of the route (Levada dos Maroços), the scenery is peaceful and dominated by traditional agricultural terraces. Following the clearly visible trail, you'll quickly reach Boca do Risco, and from here it's easy to understand why it's considered one of the most beautiful natural viewpoints on the eastern side of the island.
The Vereda da Boca do Risco is in itself a very interesting and engaging route that ends emblematically, with the natural viewpoint of Boca do Risco as the highlight of the entire hike. From here the trail can go in two directions: either towards the parish of Caniçal or the opposite side, towards the parish of Porto da Cruz.
The trail is as genuine and natural as it gets, and you won't remain indifferent to the sublime coastal views. Until the end of the route, the imposing coastal scenery continues, and as we approach the parish of Caniçal, the geological change of the route becomes clearly noticeable, once again changing the landscape scenery. The geological curiosities are immense in the final part of the trail, where it's possible to encounter Levada do Caniçal again at an altitude close to 100 meters.
The trail ends at Rua das Feiteirinhas, near Caniçal cemetery.
Either direction from Boca do Risco (Caniçal or Larano) should only be undertaken by experienced hikers and/or those with physical dexterity, in order to safeguard the proper maintenance of safety conditions.
