The Vereda da Ladeira leads to the pebble beach (calhau) of Achadas da Cruz along the route once used by local farmers, passing remnants of that practice as well as some species of community interest that make this area part of the Rede Natura 2000. Although short, this trail is very demanding and is recommended only for experienced hikers with appropriate footwear and equipment.
The route starts in the parish of Porto Moniz, specifically at the Miradouro dos Pombais na Santa. The path is well waymarked and begins with panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean and the Achadas da Cruz, with an agricultural landscape present at the trailhead that fades as you advance. The decline of farming, once strongly present along much of the route, gives way to exotic species that maintain the green tones down to the calhau.
During the descent you will find a junction where you should follow to the right alongside the main levada.
Further on you will reach the Miradouro da Ponta da Ladeira where you can use the benches and tables to have a snack and enjoy the broad, deep view. After the break the trail continues to the left; along the way you can observe some stone houses that once served as storage for agricultural activity, the small terraced fields (poios) that delimited agricultural areas and a few beehives indicating the presence of beekeepers in this area.
As you approach the end of the route the ground becomes very sandy due to the slope's exposure to the winds. Passage through this area should be slow and with a firm footing until you reach firmer ground. Tabaibeiras are commonly found on the slopes; they produce a fruit (tabaibo) consumed by locals that requires some skill to eat because of the numerous spines on its skin.
The descent is adventurous and demands experience and physical agility from hikers, as negotiating the various points requires dexterity and some ability to improvise given the vicissitudes imposed by natural phenomena.
Near the end of the route, after crossing the small stream of Ribeira do Calvário, you will arrive at a junction. To the right is the descent to the calhau and to the left the ascent toward the Teleférico. If you choose to go right and head to the calhau, be aware that you should not attempt to swim, as the access points do not guarantee a safe entry.
Turning left you will reach the promenade where you can enjoy a calm walk by the palheiros and agricultural fields. The promenade and the circuit at Fajã da Quebrada Nova are a favourite spot for those seeking relaxation and moments of tranquility.
When returning you can choose to climb back via the same route, take the Vereda do Calhau, or even experience the thrills of the Achada da Cruz cable car (teleférico). If you opt to ascend using one of these alternatives to the descent route, arrange your return and coordinate your transport.
