With incomparable grandeur, the Penha d’Águia has become one of the most important geological symbols of the Madeira archipelago. Located between Porto da Cruz and Faial, in the municipality of Machico, this massive formation is a true natural monument.
The majesty of this geological feature can be seen from numerous points across the island of Madeira. Reaching nearly 600 metres in height, its enormity unmistakably shapes the region’s landscape, being a central feature in the vistas from some of Madeira’s most emblematic viewpoints.
The ascent to Penha d’Águia is therefore an experience that is always unforgettable, though quite challenging and recommended only for hikers with good physical endurance. The route features steep gradients and dirt tracks, yet still offers reasonable hiking conditions.
The Vereda da Penha d’Águia starts at Caminho D. Sebastião. The route is estimated to take 2h30 and is almost always flanked by exotic vegetation. The arrival at the summit is rewarded with an expansive view over the local settlements, the Madeira mountain massif and the Atlantic Ocean.
